Most termite pest species in US are subterranean termites and need contact with the soil and moisture. Their nests may be visible as a mound, or be concealed underground. Worker termites can travel up to 100m or more through the soil in mud tubes or they can follow tree roots or service pipes to get into homes looking for food sources. A colony can number several million individuals. Their diet consists of cellulose, starches and sugars and these nearly all come from wood.

Termites derive much of their protein from fungi, which thrive in humid moist conditions. Where buildings are attacked there is often more than one entry point and in most cases entry is from concealed areas. Timbers vary in their susceptibility to attack, but those that are susceptible include both soft and hardwoods. Subterranean termite colonies due to there below ground nature are difficult to find. Termite colonies are found in the root crown or heartwood of living trees, tree stumps, behind sleeper retaining walls, under concrete and sometimes even under floors in homes. Every termite colony consists of 4 casts each with a specific role in the colonies social structure.

Bed Bugs are wingless insects, roughly oval in shape, 4-5mm long when fully grown, and are fast runners. They are rust brown in color and change to a deeper red brown following a blood meal. Bed Bugs are flattened and being thin means that they can hide in narrow cracks and crevices, making detection often very difficult. They tend not to live on humans and the only contact is for a blood meal. Most blood feeding occurs at night, and they generally seek shelter during the day and become inactive while digesting the blood meal. They can survive for long periods without feeding.

Bed Bugs shelter in a variety of dark locations, mostly close to where people sleep. These include under mattresses, floorboards, paintings and carpets, behind skirting, in various cracks and crevices of walls, within bed frames and other furniture, and behind loose wallpaper. Blood spotting on mattresses and nearby furnishings is often a sign of an infestation.

Cockroaches of one species or another are almost universal in bakeries, flour mills, breweries, houses, offices, warehouses, ships, hotels, restaurants, hospitals and schools. They prefer to live in dirty areas and consequently will spread disease organisms such as salmonella, or those responsible for tuberculosis and dysentery.

To develop effective control programs for cockroaches it is necessary to understand their biology and to properly identify the species. Some common pest species of cockroaches are the German, Brown-banded, American, Smoky brown and Oriental cockroaches. All of these cockroaches have the same body form and differ only in size, appearance and biological habits.
Pest cockroaches have different habitat preferences and actively seek out harbourages where food, moisture and temperature are suitable to their individual needs.

Although Bees are beneficial insects, they become a danger to the health of humans and pets as a stinging pest, when they build nest or hives in or adjutant to areas where we live. Most Bees are not predatory and will attack only when threatened. Care should be taken as their stings can adversely affect some people.

It is important to keep people away from the nest. It is best to keep children and pets inside, or at least well away from the nest area. If the nest is near the house, keep doors and windows closed.

Adult fleas are normally 1-4mm long brownish in colour, without wings but very powerful legs which are adapted for jumping. Female fleas can live up to 2 years during which time they can lay up to 1000 eggs.

Habitat Findings:
Fleas live exclusively as parasites of warm-blooded animals. The female lay their eggs close to or on the infested animal. Wall to wall carpets are also an ideal enviroment.

Consumption Findings:
Larvae feed on debris and adult flea droppings, where as the adult flea feeds soley on blood

Ants are social insects that live in colonies or nests. The nests may be located in soil near the house, in the garden, crawl-spaces, ceilings and walls, and under concrete slabs. Ants have three castes: queens, males and workers. Queens and males are the reproductive caste and workers are sterile females without wings. New nests are created by single queens that lay eggs and tend the larvae and pupae until the worker ants mature. Workers often shift the brood from place to place as moisture and temperature fluctuates in the nest. When workers forage for food and water they often enter the home and become a nuisance by just being present. Some species may also contaminate food.

The house mouse is small, gray-brown in color, with an almost naked tail as long or longer than its body and weighing less than an ounce. The mouse, however, can eat about one-tenth of its weight each day.

They prefer life indoors in the comfort of niches between walls and behind cabinets and appliances. The House Mouse has a very prolific reproductive system breeding year round and having as many as eight litters annually. Females can start having their litters at the age of one and a half to two month.
